Diabetes is a disease treated by endocrinologists and is a condition of high blood sugar levels. If left untreated complications can occur such as kidney failure, blindness and failure to appreciate sensation in the feet leading to infection and deformity. Patients with diabetes also have an increased risk of heart disease, stroke and circulation problems.
Typically patients with Type I diabetes are diagnosed at a young age and need to be treated with insulin immediately.
Type II diabetes is usually diagnosed in middle age although increasingly much younger patients are being diagnosed. Those with Type II can often be treated with tablets but with time most will require additional treatment with insulin. New treatments are now available to patients with Type II diabetes that assist with weight loss and improve insulin sensitivity giving patients greater choice before the decision to commence on insulin.
